Government Relations
The Office of Government Relations serves as the primary point of contact between ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ, the Office of the President, as well as state and federal government offices and legislative bodies. This office works with elected officials, executive branch leaders and other universities to develop and implement strategies and programs to achieve public funding goals and to foster positive and effective ongoing relationships.
The General Assembly begins on the second Wednesday in January of each year and runs through mid-April. The session lasts for 90 consecutive calendar days. The final day of session is called "Sine Die."
The President travels to Annapolis regularly during the legislative session to meet with state legislators to fully represent ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ and its needs, priorities and accomplishments.
The President also delivers testimony on key issues affecting the University, including the University's budget request. He works with the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents, the chancellor, other USM presidents, Governor's Office, and the (MHEC) on Maryland's higher education issues.
The President talks to legislators throughout the year through on-campus visits, telephone, and Annapolis visits to educate members about the University. He also hosts legislator visits on campus.
The Chief Government and Legislative Affairs Officer serve as the University's liaison to state legislators in Annapolis and the University's federal representatives.
